The Putney and District Progress Association (PDPA) was established in 1912 to improve the amenity of local residents. According to local historian Julie Dawson in the March 1997 edition of the 'Ryde Recorder', a publication of the Ryde District Historical Society, it was in 1912 that:

'Putney was obviously growing rapidly yet there was no water supply, no formed roads, no postal facilities or schools. Gas and electricity had not found its way into its extremities either. This lack of what was already accepted by other parts of the municipality as basic to life in the suburbs must have galled locals. Individual lobbying had proved unsuccessful. Perhaps lobbying as a group might help. Thus the Putney Progress Association was formed.'

Putney has certainly changed a lot since 1912; yet the objectives of PDPA remain the same, and just as much a legitimate part of the democratic process today – this being to lobby all tiers of government on behalf of residents to maintain and improve our local community and way of life.
